Meet Your Designer: An Interview with Phuong Minh Nguyen

We love the close relationships that come from deigning custom gowns. Getting to work with brides one-on-one affords us a chance to enhance dresses with just the right personal touches. Since we get to learn so much about our brides, we thought it was only fair that we also share a bit about ourselves too.

The following is an interview with our designer Phuong. She is one of the most kind, creative, and passionate souls we have ever met. We love her, and we know you will too! Keep reading for some fun insight into her journey.

DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO DESIGN DRESSES?

“When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a flight attendant when I grew up. But when I took my first flight, I realized that I actually hate flying. It was definitely a no for becoming a flight attendant . As I got older, I knew I always had passion for fashion, and I wanted to work in the fashion industry when I grew up.”

WHERE DID YOUR LOVE OF CREATING DRESSES BEGIN?

“I always knew that I loved fashion, but I didn't think I was good enough to be a dress designer. One day, I just decided to go for it. I switched my college major from fashion merchandising to fashion design, and I never looked back. I fell in love with the sewing and designing classes immediately, so I knew in my heart that I made the correct choice.”

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST FAVORITE DRESS THAT YOU HAVE CREATED SO FAR?

“There are so many amazing dresses that I have created so far, but my most favorite one would be the one I am making right now for a client in Alabama. It is a very big ball gown with a lot of crystal embellishments and a super long train-3-meter train.”

WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?

“I mostly draw from nature and architecture. Nature inspires me with the colors and the texture of things. Architecture inspires me with the shape and form.”

WHAT WOULD YOUR PERSONAL DREAM DRESS LOOK LIKE?

“It would be a matching dress with my baby daughter. The main color of the dresses would be nude/ champagne, with a colorful floral embroidery applique. My dress would be a lightweight illusion mermaid dress with a very long train, and her dress would be a little A-line princess dress.”

IF YOU WERE NOT A DRESS DESIGNER, WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM JOB BE?

“My other dream job would be to design jewelry.”

IF YOU GOT THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE A DRESS FOR ANYONE, WHO WOULD IT BE?

Jessica Alba, I think she is really great.  I have followed her for a long time, and she is such an inspiration.  She is beautiful, successful, a great mom, and she really seems down to earth.  I would really love the chance to get to work with her some day.

WHERE DO YOU MOST WANT TO TRAVEL?

I would have to say anywhere in southern Europe would be amazing. I just love the history, the architecture, and I especially love how fashionable everyone is there. The whole area is so inspirational, I am really looking forward to going back some day.
